NFCR Joins Earth Day To Stimulate Awareness  of Environmental Causes of Cancer

Today is Earth Day, and people around the world are focusing on ways to reduce pollution and take better care of our planet.   The National Foundation for Cancer Research is joining in to support increased awareness of the environmental causes of cancer, which includes radiation, water pollution, and air pollution from cars, factories, and power plants.

Air pollution in particular has been shown to cause lung cancer.  For instance, gases from auto exhaust and smokestacks mix with oxygen in the air to form very small particles that are breathed in.  Even though smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, breathing polluted air over the long-term could raise the risk of lung cancer as much as breathing second-hand smoke!  Studies have shown that the more air pollution increased, the higher the risk becomes of dying from lung cancer, heart disease, or from any cause.

In our homes, radon can be a significant contaminant of our air quality.  It is estimated that radon can cause thousands of preventable lung cancer deaths every year. Click here to learn how to reduce radon in your home.

Understanding the relationship between occupational exposures from our environment and cancer has resulted in significant reductions in exposure to several toxic substances – for instance, arsenic, asbestos, and benzidine.  There are a number of other chemicals that are under regulation in most countries around the world, which were not regulated previously; and there is some evidence that rates are decreasing for some cancers that are related to these exposures.

Fortunately, there is progress being made, yet, there is much work to be done on the environmental causes of cancer Research into the molecular mechanisms of cancer is vitally important, so that our scientists can figure out how to stop cancer before it starts
